Nick Lang discussing Twisted, Starkid’s upcoming musical parody of Aladdin
I think that my favorite part is when Darren sees the Potter stinks buttons and he is supposed to say, “Where did you get this button?” But he says “Who made that pin?” And that’s how he says it. Why did he say it like that? We just thought it was really funny. And he made a stupid face and a stupid voice just for that one line. We don’t know why he did it, but we said that’s the best part of the show.
Many years ago, I lived with Darren for a summer. Basically, I started telling him about our ideas for The Very Potter Musical; a musical about Harry Potter. This was a year before we actually did it. And Darren starting saying like, “Oh yeah, yeah, yeah that’s pretty cool, I was thinking about writing two Harry Potter themed songs.” And he wanted to write one where Harry Potter was just a metaphor in the songs that he was writing. And one was a song called ‘Goin’ Back to Hogwarts’ that was about, you know, going back to your childhood and going back to your friends and stuff like that.
And then he was like, “Then I want to write a song called ‘I Was Harry Potter’. Where it’s about you losing everything and about how you used to be a cool guy and now you’re a loser”. Those were his two ideas for Harry Potter themed songs.
And then when we were doing the first one we were like, “Hey let’s use your idea for that song ‘Goin’ Back to Hogwarts’ and that’ll be the beginning of the show”. And he was like, “Yeah sure okay”.
And in this one, we were like, let’s use the ‘I Was Harry Potter’ idea. This was also when we made up the show, right after the sequel was done; we assumed that Darren would be writing music for it, but he ended up not being able to.

We edited it so it looks less rough than the real show actually was. And during the real show, at one point me and Matt were backstage crying cause we were like “This is not going well.” And we were like “This is a disaster.” We thought it was a disaster. Towards the end of Act 1, we were like “This isn’t going well.” But then Act 2 came in, and the ending happened, and we were like “Aww that was great.

That is Oxford, Ohio. (x)
Our rehearsal time kept getting cut down more and more. And we only had Darren for an hour before the show… We never saw Darren actually reading the lines, the only thing we had time to do with Darren was walk him through and tell him where to stand in every part, so Darren did a great job!
We kept on lying to people, pretty much, we kept on saying “Oh it’s just gonna be a reading. It’s just gonna be a reading, don’t worry guys…” The more and more we were like “We’re never gonna actually get to do this show,” so we were like “This is our last shot, this is the last time we’re gonna have some of this people, it’s the last time we’re gonna be able to get Darren.” So we just kept on making it bigger and bigger without telling anybody.
Darren thought he was just going to be sitting, reading, until the day of. He got there and we said “Alright, Darren, here’s your costume back. We’ve gotta draw that scar on your head. You’re gonna stand here and here.” And he was like “You guys. You stinkers. I knew you were gonna do this.
